John B. Tinker Scholarship in History
– UNVEILING A HIDDEN HISTORY OF U.S. IMMIGRATION –
When Erica Toffoli was considering which university to attend, she was attracted to the University of Toronto by its international reputation and the calibre of its history professors. Her doctoral research examines the origins and development of the Latin American “illegal alien” in the United States.
“The rhetoric of the current climate seems much more focused on exclusion rather than striking a balance between control and ways of offering amnesty to undocumented immigrants. My research looks at undocumented immigrants, many of whom were agricultural workers, in the Southeast and Southwest United States from 1965 to 1985. I hope it will help unveil a history of migration, discrimination and political activism behind the everyday products that we often take for granted.”
