Schulich Leader Scholarship
– FIGHTING CANCER –
At 14, Joan Miguel Romero lost his father to cancer. That loss motivated him to pursue a career in cancer research, and in 2013 he enrolled in the pathobiology specialist program at the University of Toronto. Last year, he co-led a Victoria College student initiative to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. This fall, Romero is starting a master’s at U of T’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology. He plans on becoming a clinician-scientist, researching immunotherapy in pancreatic cancer.
“Because of my father passing away from cancer, going to university without financial support would have been difficult. The scholarship has given me the opportunity to focus exclusively on my studies and extracurricular involvements. I’m very grateful to Seymour Schulich for establishing this scholarship program because it allows students from across the country to pursue studies in their chosen fields and develop their character and skills through the array of opportunities the University offers.”
